Show Notes

In this episode of the Legends and Dragons podcast, hosts Jimmy and Phillip catch up after a two-week break to discuss vacation highlights, martial arts training, local community events, and a heavy dose of nostalgia [00:17], [00:44]. Philip’s First Cruise Experience

Phillip shares his enthusiastic review of going on a cruise for the first time [00:50].

The Routine: He describes keeping a strict routine, waking up at 4:30 AM to work out before heading down to a reserved window table for breakfast with his wife, Virginia [01:39].

Activities & Excursions: They sailed with Royal Caribbean on the Mariner [12:27] and visited ports in Costa Maya and Cozumel, where they snorkeled with stingrays and drove dune buggies [02:31]. Onboard, they collected stone charms in a jewelry shop scavenger hunt [04:10] and watched magic, comedy, and ice skating shows [02:45].

The "Gracie" Mix-Up: While streaming a live fight on his phone at the ship's sports bar, Phillip drew a crowd of other husbands [05:33], [06:11]. After explaining to someone that he teaches Jiu-Jitsu at Renzo Gracie DFW, a rumor spread across the ship that he was actually a member of the famous Gracie family ("Hyler/Hoer Gracie"), leading to several funny encounters [06:49], [07:43].

Returning to Jiu-Jitsu & Training

After 10 days of vacation eating, Phillip shares how difficult it was to transition back to the mats [13:23], joking that his lungs felt like they were going to explode during open mat training [13:32].

Cruising Belt System: Phillip introduces a humorous analogy, equating cruise loyalty points to Jiu-Jitsu ranks where every cruise is worth "one stripe" on a belt [09:32].

Gym Highlights: The hosts celebrate raising over $2,100 for the Weedify Foundation, an organization focused on getting veterans onto martial arts mats [19:42], [20:38]. They also discuss their tough training room, mentioning a recent judo black belt who got caught in a toe hold [35:50].

90s Nostalgia & Evolving Technology

The conversation shifts to contrasting the experiences of the younger generation with their own childhoods [39:54]. They reminisce about:

The days of VCRs, late fees, and rewinding tapes [40:01].

Answering machines with small cassette tapes and custom background music [40:39].

Looking through Target cassette inserts to memorize lyrics [41:46] and getting their first CD players in the early 90s [42:03].

The era of dial-up internet, America Online (AOL), and chat rooms [43:05], [43:25].

Current Events & Wrap-Up

Toward the end of the episode, they talk about a massive local flood that hit the Hurst/Bedford area but completely missed Keller [22:23], reminding listeners to “turn around, don’t drown” when facing flooded roads [23:58]. They close out the show by encouraging listeners to support veterans by checking out and donating to the We Defy Foundation online [52:25].
